How can you find out if a school is accredited?

Category: Education

Answer:

The purpose of accreditation is to guarantee that the education provided by a particular school meets adequate levels of quality. Private accrediting agencies develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations to assess whether or not those criteria are met. Institutions and/or programs that request an agency’s evaluation and that meet an agency’s criteria are then “accredited” by that agency.

The US Department of Education has a database that shows a list of educational institutions and programs that are, or were, accredited by an accrediting agency or state approval agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a reliable authority.

The database can be found here – http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.aspx
