What types of batteries are available for electric wheelchairs?
Most electric wheelchair manufacturers utilize deep cycle lead-acid batteries for use in their mobility devices. The two most popular types of batteries used in an electric wheelchair are wet-cell and gel-cell lead-acid batteries. They are preferred because they can be recycled and are often relatively inexpensive. One battery will typically consist of 2 x 12v batteries = 24v.
Although wet cell batteries have the ability to hold more energy, there are certain drawbacks such as environmental and maintenance issues that come about during their use. Gel-cell batteries were developed to overcome of these issues and are the preferred battery for use on airlines and cruise ships.
