What are the coating options for hard bound books?

Category: Printing & Publishing

Answer:

Coatings on hard bound books are often added to generate a high gloss finish that produces a more professional looking book. In addition to the look of the book, a coating will also help resist scuffs, moisture, and fingerprints. Coating options will usually include aqueous, gloss lamination, UV, and varnish. Check with your local book printer or try some of the online companies that print and bind books. They can provide help and advice as to what might be your best options.

    I’d add two points:
    1) Coating is not just for appearance. It is also necessary to protect the book.
    2) Matte film laminate is another choice for coating. Getting fancier, a matte film laminate with spot gloss uv to highlight selected areas is sometimes available.
