What is a caste system?

Category: Society & Culture

Answer:

A caste system is a social arrangement that involves several sets of unchanging groups. A person born into one caste or group rarely changes castes or mixes with members of other castes. This social system has been followed and developed over several thousand years and still exists today in different forms across the world.

India has the most famous caste system. Legally the Indian government has denounced the practice but has a history of prejudice toward many of its lower classes. By law, all castes are to be treated equally and education is free and open to all. Even with all of these safeguards in place, the caste system continues to thrive in India due to a combination of political, religious, economic, and social factors.
