What is the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom?

Category: Digital Cameras

Answer:

Optical zoom and digital zoom are internal features that are used to magnify images and are offered on virtually all digital cameras. Optical and digital zooms, however, are a world apart in the way they actually accomplish the magnification.

Digital zoom uses the cameras internal memory functions to increase the size of the image but reduce the image quality.

Optical zoom actually uses the cameras lens and optics to bring an image in. It is, by far, the superior and preferred method of magnifying an image with a digital camera.
