What is a firewall?

Category: Computers & Internet

Answer:

A firewall is an access control system that monitors information sent through an internet connection to your computer or network of computers. This type of internet security can be either software or hardware.

Software firewalls, sometimes called personal firewalls, are computer programs that control network traffic based on security protocols set forth by the user. Most computer operating systems will have a firewall installed in their basic configuration. Aftermarket personal firewall protection software can also be purchased and installed overriding the default settings of the OS. The most popular and best firewall programs are Zone Alarm, Comodo, PC Tools Firewall, and Online Armor.

Hardware firewalls are most often found in routers with a hard wired or wireless connection and will usually have a decent out of the box configuration that will work with most home networks.
