What is a GNU license or GNU General Public License (GPL)?

Category: Software

A GNU license aka GNU General Public License (GPL) is a free software license that gives users the freedom to share and change previous versions of a program but prevent it from being turned into proprietary software. To allow this distribution, Copyleft was introduced.

Copyleft uses copyright law, but instead of limiting a programs circulation, it expands it, and ultimately keeps the program free. The central idea of copyleft is that everyone gets permission to run the program, copy the program, modify the program, and distribute modified versions of the program. However, it does not allow anyone to add restrictions to the program or sell the program for a fee.
