What is a GSM cell phone network?

Category: Cell Phones

Answer:

GSM Cell PhoneGSM is an acronym that stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. It is the most commonly used of the three cell phone technologies (TDMA, CDMA, and GSM). If you travel outside of the US, you’ll typically only be able to use your phone if it is on a GSM network. What is it exactly though? It is an open digital cell phone technology that uses a SIM card. The SIM card is considered your digital identity and is associated with your cell phone carrier’s network rather than the cell phone itself. This gives you the ability to change phones without having to contact your provider. As long as you don’t have a country specific SIM card, you’ll be able to use your phone in different areas of the world. GSM operates on multiple frequencies around the world.1900 MHz is used in North America, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz is typically used everywhere else. So if your cell phone can utilize multiple frequency bands, you’ll be able to use it abroad. GSM is used in the US by AT&T and T-Mobile. Sprint, Verizon, and MetroPCS use CDMA.
