How can osteoporosis be prevented?

OsteoporosisThe American Orthopedic Association suggests that osteoporosis (or, thinning of the bones) can be prevented by following medically-approved advice for better bone health. A few recommended actions include:

Drink less alcohol: Heavy drinking (more than three drinks daily) can adversely impact bone density and interfere with the body’s bone-healing ability. Studies also suggest that chronic drinking may decrease the incidence of healthy, new bone formation. Individuals who quit drinking alcoholic beverages altogether tend to exhibit an improved chance for bone loss recovery over time.

Stop smoking: The tobacco in cigarettes disturbs the natural balance of calcitonin in the body, a hormone which has been clinically found to be essential in building strong, healthy bones.

Increase daily intake of calcium and vitamin D: Calcium and vitamin D go hand-in-hand when it comes to creating strong and resilient bones. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium, and calcium plays an important role in overall bone health. Consultation with a licensed physician is strongly advised to find out how much of an increase in daily consumption is safe.
