How long is a marathon?

Category: Sports & Recreation

MarathonThe first Olympic marathon, in 1896, was set at a length of 24.8 miles to symbolize the distance that Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens. The exact length of ensuing Olympic marathons also varied depending on the route established for each venue. It wasn’t until 1921 that the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) set all future marathon races at a distance of 26 miles, 385 yds or 42.195 km. So starting at the Olympic games of 1924, all marathons were of this established length.
