What is a locked cell phone?

Category: Cell Phones

Answer:

locked cell phoneA locked cell phone is basically a particular type of cell phone that is locked into service with one specific service provider. Most CDMA based cell phones are locked and can only be used with one carrier. Sprint, Virgin Mobile, and Verizon Wireless utilize CDMA technology. To unlock a cell phone you’ll typically need to be on a GSM based network (AT&T, T-Mobile) and have a SIM card.

If a cell phone is locked, the subscriber ID number on the SIM card has been programmed, with the carrier’s software, to only work with the serial number of that particular phone. If the SIM card and phone serial numbers aren’t the same, the phone won’t work. The SIM card won’t work in other phones, and the phone won’t work with other SIM cards. An unlocked cell phone must be used to achieve this freedom.
