What is magna cum laude? Summa cum laude?

Category: Education

Answer:

Graduation HonorsMany high schools and universities use Latin phrases to honor and designate a certain level of academic excellence. The requirements necessary to achieve these merits will often vary from school to school but they typically warrant a higher than average GPA, specific coursework, or other significant academic achievement. Most schools and universities offer these distinctions:

  • Cum Laude
  • Magna Cum Laude – with high honor
  • Summa Cum Laude – with highest honor

In the US, each school or university will set their own standards for each designation making it difficult to compare awards from one school to another. The designation/honor is typically stated on the diploma each student receives and will often be added to the resumes and grad school applications.
