Is it necessary to have a lock on my garage door?

Category: Home Improvement

Answer:

If an automatic garage door has been installed, it is typically not required to have a lock. Most newer garage doors also function as a lock, thus making it much harder for intruders to gain access. If you have an older automatic garage door you may have to verify if your door can be lifted from the outside. DASMA, the trade association for the garage door industry, has discouraged attaching a lock when an automatic door opener is present. Many times someone will lock the door and then activate the opener. This action will inevitably cause damage to the garage door. If no opener is installed on your garage door, a lock is highly recommended.
