After his death in the 5th century (461 AD) Saint Patrick’s day was only considered a religious holiday that was celebrated by Irish families during the Christian season of Lent. St. Patrick would often travel to Ireland to spread and teach Christianity. He used the shamrock to explain to the Holy Trinity to the native Irish. This symbol and the color green have survived and have become the standard for celebrations throughout the world.
