What is PIP or personal injury protection auto insurance coverage?

Category: Auto Insurance

Answer:

PIP Car InsurancePersonal injury protection or PIP is a type of auto insurance coverage that allows for specific benefits (medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs, etc.) for the policy holder if they are injured in an accident. PIP insurance will typically cover the driver and the passengers of the vehicle regardless of who was at fault. If you live in a “No-Fault” state, you are typically required to purchase PIP coverage in order to operate your vehicle. Twelve US States and Puerto Rico are considered “No-fault” states (see below).

  • Florida
  • Hawaii
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Utah

The remaining US states consider PIP to be an optional coverage and do not require it. Many individuals, who have good health care coverage in these states, will elect to skip PIP coverage.
