What is spyware? What is malware? Is there a difference?

Category: Computers & Internet

Answer:

Spyware is typically hidden software that attempts to achieve control of certain behaviors of your computer or web browser without the user being aware. It is most often used to serve advertisements, hijack home pages, collect personal information, and track browsing habits. It can be very difficult to remove without the correct anti-virus/spyware program.

Malware, on the other hand, is a more all encompassing term used to describe several forms of malicious programs. Malware typically includes spyware, adware, key loggers, trojans, worms, and viruses. Any form of software with the intention of collecting, hijacking, or damaging your computer, may be considered malware. Malware is most often bundled with other software without the user’s knowledge.

So spyware is a form of malware.
