What are OEM ink cartridges?

Category: Office Supplies

Answer:

OEM InkOEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM ink cartridges are brand new cartridges that have been designed and manufactured for use in brand specific printing hardware. Cartridges from brands like HP, Canon, Epson, Kodak, and Lexmark are considered OEM. They are typically more expensive than generic or remanufactured ink brands but are often said, by some, to contain higher quality ink and print heads. The generic ink cartridge manufacturers claim that their models are just as good or better and offer prices that are usually at least 50% less than their OEM counterparts. See this article regarding the head to head testing of OEM and generic cartridges. Many times, if you buy a newer printer model, you may not even have a choice between OEM and generic/remanufactured because there is generally a lag due to the time it takes the generic manufacturer to recreate the new cartridge design.
