What causes hiccups?

Category: Health & Beauty

Answer:

HiccupsBefore giving an accurate description of what causes hiccups, you’ll probably need to understand the function of your diaphragm. Your diaphragm is a muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen and plays an important part in breathing. Hiccups are involuntary spasms within the diaphragm that are caused by irritations from ingested food and drink. These irritations cause contractions that are followed by a sudden closure in your vocal cords, which produces an unusual gulping or hiccup sound. For many, a session of hiccups will typically last only a few minutes to up to an hour.

Other universal triggers for hiccups include:

  • Eating too much, too fast
  • Drinking carbonated beverages
  • Consuming too much alcohol
  • Sudden changes in temperature
  • Excitement and/or Stress
