What is a biathlon?

Category: Sports & Recreation

Answer:

Biathlon - ShootingThe Biathlon is a sport/race that takes place during the winter and the Winter Olympics. It is a unique sport which unites cross country skiing and precision shooting. A typical biathlon requires participants to ski with a rifle to specific destinations where five targets are set. The athlete must hit each target in order to continue without penalty. If a shot is missed either a time penalty or penalty laps are assessed. The participant will stop to shoot either two or four times, depending on the particular event and will alternate between the standing and prone positions. The first Olympic biathlon took place in 1960 in the Squaw Valley, CA Winter Olympic Games. Although a biathlon is a somewhat of an obscure sport in the US, it is one of the more popular winter sporting events in all of Europe.
