What is a database?

Category: Computers & Internet,Software

Answer:

In simple terms, a database is essentially “data” that is arranged and stored in tables so that it can easily be accessed and displayed by a computer system. Specialized software known as Database Management Software (DBMS) is often used to retrieve information from each specific type of database. Some of the more popular database software includes:

  • MySQL
  • Microsoft SQL
  • Oracle

Most of today’s database solutions are often implemented on a Windows or Linux platform and provide the utilities for data storage and permissions. This is known as the back-end. The front-end interface will give users access to the information stored on the database. Front end solutions can be browser based or can be accessed with a specific program such as Microsoft Access. Speed, data security, and the amount of data that needs to be stored will ultimately determine which database technology to use.
