What is a gizzard?

Category: Cooking & Food

Answer:

Chicken GizzardsA gizzard, also known as the ventriculus, is an organ that is most notable in poultry cuisine and is found in the digestive tract of all birds including chickens, ducks, and turkeys. It is basically an organ that allows fowl (it can be found in other types of species as well) to process and digest certain hard foods. Certain birds will often swallow gravel or stones along with their food. The stones are stored in the gizzard and will ultimately help grind their food, helping digestion. Gizzards are a popular food throughout the world and are often grilled, fried, and even pickled.
