What is a unity candle?

Category: Weddings

Answer:

Unity CandleThe lighting of a unity candle is a relatively new tradition/ceremony that is often added to Christian, as well as other denominational weddings in the US. It is meant to symbolize the joining of a husband and wife as well as their families. The unity candle itself is simply a large candle with two smaller candles suspended on either end by an ornamental fixture made of metal, glass, plastic, or ceramic. The ceremony concludes when both the husband and wife each use one of the smaller candles to light the larger, centered unity candle. The unity candle will remain lit while the smaller individual candles are extinguished. After the wedding, in the years to come, the couple may choose to light the candle on their anniversary.
