What is image resolution?

Category: Printing & Publishing

Answer:

Simply put, image resolution is the amount of information contained in a digital image. The unit of measure to describe this information is pixels per inch or PPI. All digital images are made up of individual colored pixels much like square tiles in a mosaic. Packing more pixels into an inch allows the image to store greater detail.

Although dots per inch, or DPI, is commonly accepted in the industry to describe digital images, technically it refers to the capability of output devices. You might hear PPI and DPI used interchangeably.

Images with a resolution of 300 PPI are recommended for use in commercial printing.
