What is lock bumping? Key bumping?

Lock bumping or key bumping is a method, typically used by locksmiths, for opening a conventional pin & tumbler lock. It is a technique that allows lock professionals to legally bypass locks using a special type of bump key. The problem is that locksmiths are not the only ones using these special keys; criminals have begun using them as well.

Lock Bumping can be accomplished by inserting a special type of cut key into a lock and then tapping and quickly twisting the key. The energy transferred by the impact forces the pins within the lock to move for a fraction of a second. This movement creates enough space to allow the key to be turned and the lock opened.
