What is macrame?

Category: Arts & Crafts

Macrame - MacraméMacramé (macrame) is a hobby or craft that utilizes connected knots to create a variety of decorative patterns. These knotted patterns can be used to create a number of pieces including jewelry, clothing, accessories, wall art, pot holders, and more – the sky is the limit. Beads or other accents are often added to the knots to add color and diversity. To make the knots you’ll first need to choose a cording material. The cording you choose will ultimately depend on the final product. For heavier pieces you’ll often want to use stronger or thicker thread that is flexible enough to create the knots. Some of the more popular cording materials include:

  • Hemp
  • Jute
  • Rattail
  • Leather
  • Yarn

The knots you will find in macrame crafts will often vary depending on the final product. The most popular knots used for macrame include:

  • Square Knot
  • Clove Hitch (half hitch)
  • Larks Head Knot
  • Josephine Knot (double coin knot)

The materials and tools used to create macramé are typically inexpensive so they can be created on a smaller budget.
