What is National Margarita Day? When did it start?

Category: Dates to Remember

After some fairly extensive searches, nothing can be found on either the origins or history of National Margarita Day. There is plenty of great, unconfirmed, information on the history of the “margarita” but nothing as far as when or how this National day started. Chalk this one up as a promotional holiday created by a tequila company somewhere in the world. I guess it worked. Every February 22nd we celebrate it.

The purpose of National Margarita Day is basically another excuse for the world to drink tequila, not that you really need one, and to honor one of the most popular alcoholic beverages. The margarita is the most popular tequila-based cocktail in the United States. It is made with tequila mixed with triple sec and lime juice and is often served with salt on the rim of the glass.

Wait….We found the origin. It was first thought up by Henry Rodriguez in 1989. He worked for an advertising agency and was the son of a former agave farmer in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was working on an ad campaign for one of his clients and came up with the idea for National Margarita Day.
