What is open source? Open source software?

Category: Software

Answer:

Open Source SoftwareOpen source is a term used to describe software that is available to the public with source code that is published with a license that allows anyone to examine, change, and create derivative works with only a few privileges given to the initial creator. This type of license has essentially created a way for communities to be able to quickly and efficiently advance specific types of software. Examples of open source software and projects include Joomla, Drupal, WordPress, MySQL, Firefox, Linux, as well as many others.

To be considered open source software certain criteria must be met:

  • The software should be freely distributed.
  • All relevant source code should be included.
  • Anyone can examine or change the source code.
  • No restrictions on redistribution.

The GNU General Public License is often used to guarantee flexibility and to ensure the software is free for all users.
