What is the NYSE?

Category: Finance

The NYSE or New York Stock Exchange provides a venue for buyers and sellers to trade publicly traded shares of company stock. It is the largest stock exchange as measured by market cap and has a physical location of 11 Wall Street, New York City, NY. The NYSE is unique because it offers electronic trading but, unlike the Nasdaq, the NYSE has an actual trading floor where traders can execute transactions on behalf of clients (often for institutional trades). The NYSE a.k.a. “The Big Board” is typically open Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM EST to 4:00 PM EST. It does, however, shut down trading for nine holidays and for other special circumstances.
