How should wood flooring be cleaned?

Category: Flooring

Answer:

Floors should be swept or vacuumed with a soft attachment to keep abrasive bits and pieces from scratching it. Avoid excess moisture and wax unless recommended by the manufacturer. There are also several steps you can take to help preserve your wood floor besides regular cleaning and maintenance.

  • Use a doormat outside your home to collect any dirt, debris, and other abrasives.
  • When mopping use a cool damp mop. Not soaked with water.
  • Use felt pads under furniture legsĀ  to reduce scratching and scuffing.
  • Keep blinds closed and the floors out of direct sunlight. Install UV shielding on windows.
  • Keep animals and high heels off the floor as they can scratch and gouge wood.
  • If you are moving furniture or appliances over the floor never slide them without felt.
  • Use rugs and mats that are manufacturer approved on high traffic areas of your floor.
  • Keep the room temperature and humidity controlled and use a dehumidifier if necessary.
